VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior forward
Essie Bonney tallied once in each half and Binghamton women's soccer (3-1) recorded its second straight shutout with a 2-0 victory over visiting Manhattan (0-4) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Despite a 21-5 shots margin, BU couldn't breathe easy until Bonney scored an insurance goal in the 84th minute. The 2-0 win was Binghamton's third such result and it kept the team unbeaten at home (2-0) this fall.Â
"We were able to execute our game plan in certain moments but it was a little inconsistent at times," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "It was good for us to get that first goal ... and then I thought a couple of subs changed the game for us in the second half. I felt like we had good control of the match after that point. Our backs did a nice job. We're happy with the result ... we could've potentially gotten that second goal a little earlier, but credit to Manhattan as they didn't make it easy on us. We're 3-1 and have taken care of business at home and we'll take that right now."
Bonnie was dangerous from the opening sequence on the wing and less than eight minutes in, she rang a shot off the crossbar. Then midway through the half, freshman midfielder
Olivia McKnight broke through on a strong dribble and ripped a low shot that was cleared off the line by a backtracking defender. On the ensuing corner kick, McKnight sent a ball high into the box where junior back
Erin Theiller put a head on it. Theiller's header toward goal landed in front of Bonney, who had her back to the target. She trapped it, spun and struck a volley into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
In the second half, Theiller banked a shot off the crossbar and despite heavy pressure (12-3 shots in second half), BU didn't cash in until Bonney struck again in the 84th minute. McKnight shielded a ball in traffic deep in the box to the right before dropping off a pass to the penalty spot, where Bonney cleanly deposited a right-footed kick to the lower left corner, just out of the reach of diving Manhattan keeper Camryn Nici.Â
The assist was McKnight's second of the season and gave her a team-high six points in her first four collegiate games.Â
Sophomore keeper
Haylee Poltorak wasn't tested in her two saves and Poltorak notched her third shutout in four games.Â
Binghamton now prepares for a tough set of road games at American (Friday) and George Mason (Sunday).      Â
