Women's soccer tops Wagner 1-0

Bonney scores fourth goal of season early in second half; BU remains unbeaten at home

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior forward Essie Bonney notched her fourth goal of the season 5:02 into the second half and the goal stood up as the winner as Binghamton women's soccer (5-2) defeated visiting Wagner (1-5) 1-0 Thursday night from the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Bonney had four of BU's 18 shots in the game and it was her fourth shot that found the back of the net. On the build-up to the play, redshirt freshman wing back Gabby Piontkowski fed a ball into the right corner, where freshman midfielder Olivia Meier tracked it down and turned away from the endline. Meier fed junior midfielder Ivana Pjetri outside the box on the right and Pjetri sent a sharp ball toward the far post. The ball just cleared Wagner's big center back and bounced inside the six-yard box, where Bonney struck a right-footer past the charging keeper and into the right corner.

Binghamton continued to apply pressure throughout the second half and held a 14-8 shots margin over the game's final 45 minutes.

Sophomore keeper Haylee Poltorak made four saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

"Wagner really pushed us tonight," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Their defensive pressure was difficult to play through. It was a great game for us ... we had to fight through, compete and make adjustments at the half. In the second half I thought we started to get into the flow with numbers and supporting runs. I wish we could've scored that second goal ... but big credit to Wagner. Our kids raised their level of play tonight. It had the feel of a conference game ... a one-goal game with some frantic minutes toward the end. We did a good job of that ... and this is a game that last year we might've dropped. We were able to protect the lead and get the win at the end."

Binghamton stays at home and will host FDU at 1 p.m. on Sunday for Senior Day. Pregame BU will honor its six seniors.
