VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer gets its final dress rehearsal before conference play when the Bearcats (6-2) face regional rival Cornell (4-1) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Berman Field in Ithaca. The non-league matchup features two teams brimming with confidence after going a combined 10-3 in non-conference play to date. Â
Binghamton has posted the most wins in an eight-game starting stretch since 2012. The team is one victory shy of equaling the win total of all of last season. Â
Last week, BU won a pair of home games - 1-0 over Wagner and 2-1 over FDU. In Sunday's matchup against the Knights, junior forward
Dora Hayes netted the game-winner in the 61st minute after FDU had tied the game less than nine minutes earlier. Junior midfielder
Ivana Pjetri notched a pair of assists and earned America East Player of the Week honors in the process. On defense, a back line led by senior captain
Lauren Spinnato (BU Athlete of the Week) allowed just one goal in the two games and collected the team's fourth shutout of the season.Â
Freshman midfielder
Olivia McKnight remains the team leader with 10 points. McKnight and junior forward
Essie Bonney have four goals apiece and sophomore forward
Stefania Piantadosi has two goals and two assists.
Sophomore keeper
Haylee Poltorak has played every minute and has a 1.00 goals against average.Â
Cornell has already soared past its 1-win output from a year ago and the Big Red is unbeaten at home (3-0). The team has allowed just two goals in five games. Cornell began with a 3-1 win over Iona and followed with 1-0 victories over Siena, Bucknell (on road) and St. Bonaventure. Fellow America East member Albany pinned a 1-0 loss on the visiting Big Red in its last outing on Sunday.
Freshman midfielder Ashley Durik and sophomore forward Jadyn Matthews lead the team with two goals apiece. Cornell has used three different goalkeepers, with freshman Nicole Shulman seeing the most time in four games. She has a 0.62 goals against average.
Cornell leads the all-time series 6-4-2, but Binghamton has won the last two meetings - each by a 2-0 score. The Big Red had won the previous four games in the series.
