ITHACA, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (6-2-1) and host Cornell (4-1-1) traded first-half goals before playing 80+ minutes of scoreless soccer in a 1-1 overtime draw Wednesday night from Berman Field. It was the final non-conference game for the Bearcats, who will enter America East play just one win shy of matching the victory total of all of 2018.
The Big Red benefited from fortune to score just 2:29 into the contest. A long throw-in was headed toward goal and eventually a BU clearing attempt from five yards out instead banked off a Cornell player and back into the BU net.Â
In the 16th minute, junior center back
Erin Theiller scored the equalizer. A Bearcats corner kick was partially cleared by Cornell, but freshman midfielder
Olivia McKnight one-timed it back toward goal and sophomore forward
Stefania Piantadosi flicked it into the goalmouth, where Theiller was still stationed from the corner kick. She tucked it into the near corner with the outside of her left foot to even the score at 1-1.
Binghamton held a 15-11 edge in shots and took seven corner kicks, but couldn't find the go-ahead goal. The team had three strong chances in the second half - a blast off the left goal post from junior midfielder
Ivana Pjetri in the 55th minute, a chance from McKnight on a long ball over the top that was smothered by the Big Red keeper with just under 20 minutes to play, and a 28-yard rocket from senior midfielder
Abby Wick that just edged over the crossbar with 12:11 left in regulation.Â
Sophomore keeper
Haylee Poltorak made six saves.
The Bearcats now prepare for their America East opener Sunday against Vermont. Kick-off is at 1 p.m. on Homecoming Weekend.
