Men’s Soccer Settles for 0-0 tie against Monmouth in Homecoming Game

Roorda makes career-high eight saves before 1,275 fans

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton (2-4-1) played to a scoreless tie against Monmouth (0-5-1) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Saturday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Homecoming crowd of 1,275 fans represented the Bearcats' largest of the season.

Binghamton out shot Monmouth 16-9 for the match. In the final 10 minutes of regulation and overtime, the Bearcats held a 7-2 advantage in total shots.

In goal, freshman Mats Roorda recorded a career-best eight saves. His final stop came from close range in the final moments of the second sudden-death overtime period.

"What a terrific game tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "I feel like we let the crowd down though because we didn't get a goal. I thought our guys played outstanding tonight. I felt like we were a little more on top of the game and had some great chances in both halves and in overtime to try and win the game."

After surrendering 12 goals in their first five matches, the Bearcat defense has now allowed just one goal in their last 201 minutes of play.

"We are getting better, which is a great sign for us as we move into conference play," Marco said. "We still have some work to do as we move forward but I like the way we are progressing."

This marks the second straight season Binghamton and Monmouth have played to a scoreless tie. Last season, the Hawks were the host team on Sept. 4.

Despite their winless record, the Hawks came into the match having played tough competition close during their first five matches.

"Monmouth presented us with a couple of challenges tonight," Stephen McKenna said. "They have some good individual players. A credit to them. They played well tonight."

Both Marco and McKenna were impressed with the Homecoming crowd at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

"I'd like Mo (Taylor) to bring the (BU Pep Band) every day," Marco said. "He can even bring them out to training. I thought the band was great. The fans were great and it was a great environment with the tailgating beforehand. I thought it was really cool."

"The fans were great tonight," McKenna said. "We fed off their energy throughout the game."

Binghamton begins America East Conference play next Friday at defending champion New Hampshire. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
