ALBANY, N.Y. – Alexi Schecter finished with 17 points and Kyara Frames scored 14 points, leading Albany (6-9, 2-0 AE) to a 56-53 win over Binghamton (11-3, 0-1 AE) in an America East conference women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at SEFCU Arena. The loss snapped the Bearcats' two-game win streak.
Senior guard
Kai Moon scored a team-high 17 points for Binghamton to go along with seven rebounds, two blocks and a pair of steals. Fellow senior guard
Carly Boland scored points, dished out a pair of assists and blocked a team-best three shots.
Despite jumping out to a 17-7 lead after one period of play, Binghamton was undone by the ensuing 20 minutes. The Bearcats hit just seven field goals during that stretch as the Great Danes rallied to take a 40-35 lead. At one point, Binghamton went 10 minutes without hitting a single field goal.
In the fourth period, the Bearcat offense finally got back on track as they went on a 7-0 run in the opening 1:24 to go up 42-30. Moon punctuated the run on a pair of free throws.
From there, the score went back and forth until the Great Danes broke open the game with an 8-2 run to go up 54-48 with 2:36 left to go. The Bearcats got to within 55-53 on a jumper by Boland with 58 seconds left in regulation but they were unable to score on their final two possessions of the game.
The 53 points represents a season-low for the Bearcats, who entered the game averaging 72.2 points per game. After shooting 46 percent in the opening period (7-of-15), Binghamton finished the game 20-for-54 from the field (37.0 percent).
"We played our game in the first period but we didn't hit our shots after that," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We gave Albany a lot of second-chance rebound opportunities and because of that, we couldn't get our transition game going. Give Albany credit because they have been playing much better since conference play started."
Moon now has 1,163 career points and moves into 12th place all time in Binghamton program history. Against Albany, she surpassed Erica Carter (2006-10), who finished her career with 1,150 points.
Sophomore forward
Annie Ramil finished with six points, seven rebounds and a team-best four assists. Off the bench, freshman
Denai Bowman scored six points and dished out three assists.
As a team, Binghamton blocked a season-high 10 shots. The Bearcats also finished with only 10 turnovers.
Binghamton continues conference play with a 7 p.m. game at UMBC on Wednesday.
