STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Earlette Scott scored a team-best 15 points, leading Stony Brook (3-2, 1-0 AE) to a 61-52 victory over Binghamton (0-3, 0-1 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena. The game marked the first of two straight meetings between the teams, who will square off again at Stony Brook on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Scott was 4-for-5 from the field and drained all three of her three-point field goal attempts. She was one of three Stony Brook players to reach double figures in scoring, followed by India Pagan (12 points) and Anastasia Warren (10 points).
Senior forward
Kaylee Wasco tied Scott for the game-high with 15 points. She also added a career-high eight rebounds and dished out three assists.
Sophomore forward
Birna Benonysdottir netted a career-high 13 points, hitting five of her 10 field goal attempts in the process. She also tied for the team lead with three steals.
The Bearcats clung to a 25-24 halftime lead but the Seawolves outscored them 23-11 in the third period to go up 47-36. Scott drained two of her three pointers during that stretch, including one at the buzzer.
Binghamton clawed back to within 56-50 on a three-point field goal by sophomore forward
Clare Traeger with 1:32 left in regulation. From there, however, the Bearcats turned the ball over on their next three possessions and the Seawolves went 5-for-6 from the free throw line to ice the game.
"The effort was there tonight against a very good team," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "That is something you can't coach. We have a young team but we keep getting better. We are making progress. Our post players – Kaylee and Birna did a great job in the paint."
Sophomore guard
Denai Bowman added nine points, five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Junior guard
Hayley Moore and sophomore forward
Destiny Samuel each added six points. Moore also tied Benonysdottir for the team lead with three steals.
Stony Brook held a 40-27 advantage in rebounding.
Wasco is now averaging 15.5 points in the past two games, having netted a team-high 16 points on Wednesday at St. Bonaventure.
The six points for Samuel, all of which came in the first half, represents her career high in scoring.
Moore's three steals ties her career high, which she set against UMass Lowell on Feb. 20, 2019.
