Baseball suffers second straight walk-off loss

Wegmann and Franchi homer but FAU rallies for 9-8 win to open weekend series

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Host Florida Atlantic (5-0) scored seven runs in the final two innings to overtake Binghamton baseball (0-4) with a 9-8 walk-off win Friday night at FAU Baseball Stadium.

The Bearcats were six outs away from an 8-2 win when the Owls struck for six runs in the eighth inning. Florida Atlantic then used a leadoff walk and hit batter to set the table in the bottom of the ninth before a sacrifice fly won the game with one out.

Binghamton outhit FAU 12-8 and had the game in control after plating three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. But after being stifled on three hits through the first seven innings, the Owls got to BU's bullpen in the eighth. The last of their five hits in the frame was most damaging - a 3-run home run that tied the game at 8-8. The Bearcats went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth and the hosts won it in the bottom of the frame, pinning a second-straight walk-off defeat on BU.

The Bearcats scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to jump ahead 2-0. In the third, junior shortstop Jake Evans (2-for-4) singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk. In the fifth, senior catcher TJ Wegmann took a 2-out, 1-2 pitch and banged it off the scoreboard beyond the right field wall for his second home run of the young season and a 2-0 BU lead.

Florida Atlantic tied it with a pair in the bottom of the fifth before BU bats responded with six runs over the next two innings.

In the sixth, Binghamton used four hits to score three times. Sophomore first baseman Kevin Gsell hit an RBI single to score senior second baseman Alex Baratta, who had doubled with one out. Senior third baseman Justin Drpich followed with an RBI double to deep center field to give BU a 4-2 lead. Sophomore left fielder Andrew Eng then delivered a 2-run, RBI single for a 5-2 cushion.

One inning later, BU put another three-spot on the board. Senior right fielder Daniel Franchi smacked an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for a leadoff home run. Up 6-2, BU then tacked on another when Gsell scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore designated hitter Zac Taylor capped the onslaught with an RBI double to give BU an 8-2 lead.

Sophomore left-hander Thomas Babalis had a strong outing with 6.0 innings of 3-hit ball. Babalis struck out five and allowed two runs.

Drpich and Franchi each went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

The Bearcats will send out sophomore Jack Collins in Saturday's 4 p.m. matchup.
