AUBURN, Ala. – Senior pitcher
Rayn Gibson tossed a complete-game victory and senior first baseman
Kassidy Seary drove in a pair of runs, highlight Binghamton's split in a pair of softball games during Day Two of the Auburn Tiger Intercollegiate. The Bearcats (1-8) won the opener 2-1 over Georgia Southern (11-8) in eight innings but lost 10-3 in the final to an Auburn squad (12-8) that advanced to the NCAA Regionals last year.
Seary finished the day 2-for-6 with her second home run in as many games. She has already tied her career high for home runs in a season, having homered twice during her sophomore year.
Gibson, who improved to 1-3 on the season, went the full 8.0 innings against the Eagles, allowed one run on seven hits and struck out a season-best seven better. It tied her career high for innings pitched, having gone that far twice previously during her career.
Senior outfielder
Stephanie Ragusa batted a team-best .500 (3-for-6) with a triple and a pair of runs. Freshman outfielder
Tessa Nuss went 3-for-7 (.429) with a RBI.
The Bearcats trailed Georgia Southern 1-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning. Seary, however, led off the frame with a solo home run over the center field fence.
Gibson got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning and Ragusa led off the top of the eighth inning with a triple. She scored one batter latter on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Gibson set Georgia Southern down in order.
The loss was tagged to Aaliyah Garcia, who defeated the Bearcats on Friday. Her record dropped to 4-4.
In the nightcap, however, Auburn did most of its damage in the bottom of the first inning, plating nine runs. Brittany Marsette delivered the big blow with a three-run double but the Bearcats committed three errors during the frame which led to seven unearned runs.
The Bearcats got a pair of runs back in the top of the fourth inning on RBI singles by Seary and senior catcher
Sara Herskowitz.
The Tigers tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 10-3. The Bearcats, however, extended the game in the top of the fifth inning with Ragusa scored on a RBI single by Nuss.
Neither team was able to score the rest of the game.
Lexie Handley improved to 3-4 with the win while sophomore pitcher
Morgan Bienkowski fell to 0-4 with the loss. Junior pitcher
Chelsea Howard pitched 5.1 innings in relief, scattering one run on five hits and struck out a career-high seven batters.
"Overall, I thought we did some really good things today," head coach
Michelle Johnston said. "Rayn and Chelsea had great focus on the mound and we started to put some things together offensively. I like that they showed some fight after the first inning of the Auburn game."

Binghamton concludes its stay at the Auburn Tiger Invitational on Sunday against No. 18 Minnesota (10 a.m.) and Auburn (12:30 p.m).
