Women’s lacrosse falls to Marist on the road

Sanchez nets hat-trick, but slow start hurts Bearcats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Binghamton University women's lacrosse team fell at the hands of Marist College by a score of 17-7 Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats were able to take two leads early on, but the Red Foxes had a run late in the first half to create a wide margin and held on to win.

Alyssa Sanchez stuffed the stat sheet, scoring three goals, picking up four ground balls and adding five draw controls. Emily Masera added two goals, while Paige Volkmann and Alissa Franze round out the Bearcats in the scoring column.

In the first half, the Bearcats made two stops on consecutive saves by Taylor Passuello, and were able to capitalize with a Volkmann free position goal. Marist responded with a goal, but Masera added another one to lead 2-1.

From there, the Red Foxes went on to score six straight goals to maintain a five-goal lead. Two straight goals for the Bearcats made it 7-4, but Marist would score five unanswered to lead 12-4 at the break.

The second half began with a goal by Franze and another added by Sanchez, but the final 30 minutes became a defensive battle, and the Bearcats were unable to put together enough offense. When it was all said and done, Marist came away with the win.

Passuello had 12 saves in net to lead Binghamton defensively.

The Bearcats will have a quick turnaround and will host another MAAC opponent in Niagara Tuesday afternoon. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. in Vestal.
