VESTAL, N.Y. -The Binghamton University women's lacrosse team defeated Colgate by a score of 12-8 Wednesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats won their second straight contest, and the defense notched its fourth game of the year allowing less than 10 goals.
"I saw a hard fought effort out there, a lot of that carrying over from our last win over Quinnipiac," head coach
Stephanie Allen said. "We talked about handling the moment today, whether it be from behind or in the lead, and I think we did that well throughout the contest."
The Bearcats (3-5) were led by
Paige Volkmann and
Sidra Morchower, who each scored four goals. Volkmann also added two assists for a team leading six points. Veteran leaders
Olivia Batista (two goals),
Alissa Franze and
Amelia Biancardi (one goal apiece) were also able to get on the scoresheet.
The game opened with a goal by Franze, but Colgate (3-4) managed to score twice shortly after to take a 2-1 lead. That advantage would be short-lived, as four unanswered goals gave the Bearcats a lead they would never relinquish. After the Raiders narrowed the score to 5-4, Morchower, Volkmann and Batista were able to round out the first half scoring and provide a larger 8-5 cushion at the break.
Another goal by Morchower kicked off the second half before Colgate closed the gap to 9-7. With less than 13 minutes to go, Biancardi netted a critical goal in the upper left corner to give the Bearcats some insurance. The Raiders would score once more, but the defense would hold them in check and a Volkmann finish wrapped up the 12-8 triumph.
Taylor Passuello helped lead the defense, making 10 saves including some crucial ones down the stretch.
Paige Alletzhauser had two caused turnovers and three ground balls, while
Alexa Franze added two caused turnovers of her own. Franze now leads the team with 10 on the season.
The Bearcats will open up America East action on Saturday, March 21 against Hartford beginning at 2 p.m. This weekend's matchup with Harvard has been canceled in response to the Ivy League's announcement to cancel the remainder of their spring sporting events.
