Sizzling Baseball completes sweep of VMI with 7-2 win

Marshall goes 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and Drpich drives in pair; Kopcza and Gearhart limit hosts to 4 hits

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior center fielder Shane Marshall went 3-for-5 with three RBI to pace Binghamton baseball (5-7) to a 7-2 win over VMI (4-11) and a sweep of their weekend series at Gray-Minor Stadium. The Bearcats have now won four in a row and five of their last six games.

Marshall opened the scoring in the third inning. Junior shortstop Jake Evans and junior left fielder Andrew Eng hit back-to-back singles and freshman right fielder Tommy Reifler moved them up with a sacrifice bunt. Marshall then delivered a two-run double down the left field line to stake BU to a 2-0 lead.

The Bearcats added four more runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Marshall began the uprising with an RBI single and sophomore first baseman Kevin Gsell also came through with a run-scoring single before senior third baseman Justin Drpich capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 6-0.

VMI got two runs back on a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Binghamton closed the scoring with a run in the ninth on a two-out RBI single from senior second baseman Alex Baratta.

Junior starter Josh Kopcza (W, 2-1) allowed just two hits and two runs in his 5.0 innings. He struck out two in a 1-2-3 first inning and stranded a runner on second with an inning-ending strikeout in the second before the BU bats took over.

Kopcza struck out five before giving way to freshman Dylan Gearhart, who held the Keydets in check over the final four innings for his first collegiate save. Gearhart struck out five and only gave up two hits, lowering his season ERA to 2.25.

In addition to Marshall and Drpich, Baratta went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Bearcats next play a four-game weekend set at Towson beginning on Friday afternoon.
