Softball drops 2-1 decision to Delaware

Blue Hens score both runs off of Bearcat miscues

NORFOLK, Va. – Binghamton (3-12) concluded its stay at the Norfolk-Hampton Tournament with a 2-1 setback against Delaware (18-4) on Sunday morning.

The Bearcats got a strong performance on the mound by senior Rayn Gibson and junior Chelsea Howard. Between the two of them, Binghamton scattered just two hits and two walks and did not allow an earned run.

Still, mistakes were the key to the defeat. The Bearcats were up 1-0 with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Delaware then tied the game on a fielding error and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Sophomore second baseman Marissa Braito went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. She gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when she scored on a RBI groundout by junior shortstop Makayla Alvarez. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Braito belted her triple with one out but was stranded on third base when the inning ended.

Emily Winburn improved to 4-1 with the win while the loss was tagged to Gibson, who is now 1-6.

Senior catcher Sara Herskowitz led the Bearcats this weekend with a .600 batting average (6-for-10). She scored a pair of runs, had two RBI and turned in two multiple-hit games.

Braito hit .538 (7-for-12) while Alvarez was 5-for-12 (.417) and drove in a pair of runs. Senior outfielder Stephanie Ragusa hit .400 (4-for-10) and continues to lead Binghamton this season with a .400 batting average.

As a team, Binghamton hit .313 during the Norfolk-Hampton Tournament and finished with a 2.77 collective ERA.

Binghamton heads to the Liberty Softball Challenge next Friday-Sunday.
