Women's soccer settles for 0-0 tie with Maine

Bearcats extend unbeaten streak to five games but drop into second place in crowded standings

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer collected 17 shots, including five in the first overtime period, but BU (8-5-3, 4-1-2 America East) had to settle for a 0-0 draw with visiting Maine (3-6-3, 1-5-1 AE) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The tie extended the team's unbeaten streak to five games but with the day's other results, dropped the Bearcats into second place in the conference standings with two regular season games remaining.

"We knew Maine would be a tough, physical opponent to break down and they showed it today," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "But we lacked urgency, especially on the attacking end. We created good chances in the overtime but couldn't put one away. Going forward, we need to show that kind of attacking mindset and energy for the full 90 minutes. It was disappointing to leave a couple of points on the field today and if we want to get a good postseason seed, we still need a few more results."

It was the second straight scoreless game for the Bearcats - the first time that's happened in the program's 37-year history.

Senior keeper Haylee Poltorak made eight saves for her seventh shutout of the season.

Binghamton outshot Maine 17-11 and had several near misses in each period. Sophomore mdifielder Lexi Vegoda beat the Black Bears keeper with a 25-yard shot that banked off the crossbar in the 28th minute. Midway through the second half, sophomore forward Davia Rossi broke in alone on the left side before sending her shot high. Then in the first overtime, BU had several chances inside the box. Sophomore midfielder Victoria McKnight took a pass from junior Maya Anand, spun and struck a 12-yard shot that sailed over the bar. Then as the clock wound down in the closing seconds of the extra period, Rossi dribbled in from the right, cut back and sent a left-footed shot that was saved.

Binghamton travels to Durham to face New Hampshire next Saturday afternoon.
