Clare Traeger scored a career-high 21 points, lifting Binghamton (2-0) to a 73-56 win over Canisius (0-2) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats are off to a 2-0 start for the third time in four seasons.
Traeger went 5-for-10 from the field and drained four of her six three-point field goal attempts. She also converted seven of her eight free throw attempts. In addition, Traeger finished with nine rebounds and a pair of steals.
Junior guard
Denai Bowman filled the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks. Freshman forward
Genevieve Coleman added career highs in both points (11) and rebounds (eight).
It was the final 10 minutes of regulation that proved decisive for the Bearcats. They were down 46-44 entering the fourth period but outscored the Golden Griffs 31-12 the rest of the way. The 31 points is the most ever scored by Binghamton in a period since the NCAA went to four quarters for women's basketball in 2015.
Binghamton blew the game open with an 11-0 run in a span of 2:05 to take a 59-49 lead with 4:43 left in regulation. Traeger drained two of her four three pointers during that stretch.
From there, the Bearcats went on an 8-3 run to go up 67-52 with 2:34 left to go. Coleman had six of her points during that time.
During the final 50 seconds of regulation, Traeger went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.
"Our fourth quarter was tremendous," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "The players took it on their shoulders to pick things up and our defense really helped out our offense today."
The Bearcats' win overshadowed a game-high 25 points by Dani Haskell of Canisius. She went 9-of-19 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

Zahra Barnes added nine points and two steals for Binghamton while senior guard
Hayley Moore chipped in six points, five assists and three steals. Junior guard
Cassidy Roberts notched six points and four assists.
The 73 points is the highest scoring total by Binghamton since its 78-65 win over Hartford on Feb. 22, 2020.
For the game, the Bearcats shot 45 percent (28-of-62), including 63 percent (12-of-19) in the decisive fourth period. They also finished with 16 assists as opposed to 15 turnovers and shot 77 percent from the free throw line (10-or-13).
Binghamton hosts Cornell on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
