YPSILANTI, Mich – Host Michigan State (3-4) put four players in double figures in scoring and held off Binghamton (4-5) 66-62 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Friday afternoon at the Convocation Center. The game was the first of three straight road contests for the Bearcats.
Arianna Combs and Danielle Rainey each netted a team-high 16 points. Ce'Nare Skanes added 13 points while Lachelle Austin finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite the loss, Binghamton received several impressive performances, led by junior guard
Denai Bowman. She turned in an 18-point, 14-rebound, five-assist, one-block, two-steal performance. In the process, Bowman shot 7-for-16 from the field and swished all four of her free throw attempts. The double-double was the second of her career and the 14 rebounds represented her career high.
Senior guard
Hayley Moore scored a career-high 16 points and added a game-high three steals. She shot 6-for-11 from the field and was 4-of-9 from three-point range.
Also reaching double figures in scoring was junior forward
Birna Benonysdottir, who had 17 points. She has now reached double figures in scoring a team-best five straight games.
Eastern Michigan led by as many as 12 points during the game. It was a three-point play by Combs that put the Eagles up 48-36 with 1:50 left in the third period.
Binghamton got back in the game with a 10-2 run in a span of 1:53 to pull within 52-49 with 7:25 left in regulation. Bowman had five of her points during that stretch.
Bowman brought the Bearcats to within 63-62 with 11 seconds left in regulation. At the other end of the Court, however, Combs finished off the game by going 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 10 seconds of regulation.
Junior forward
Clare Traeger added nine points, seven rebounds and a steal.
Binghamton out shot Eastern Michigan 39 percent (24-61) to 38 percent (26-67). On the boards, meanwhile, the Eagles finished with a 46-40 advantage and had 17 offensive rebounds.
From the free throw line, the Bearcats were a perfect 8-for-8 from the game. It marked their best performance since going a perfect 13-for-13 against Albany on March 6, 2019 in the America East quarterfinals.
Binghamton heads to the Florida International Tournament Dec. 20-21.
