Women’s Basketball Rally Falls Short Against Ohio 76-67

Benonysdottir nets 18 points, Moore adds 15 points

VESTAL, N.Y. – Cierra Hooks netted a game-high 20 points and Erica Johnson finished with 19 points, leading Ohio (6-3) to a 76-67 win over Binghamton (4-6) in the final round of the Florida International Holiday Hoops Classic on Tuesday morning at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. The game marked the Bearcats' final non-conference game of the season.

Hooks and Johnson were two of the four Bobcat players to reach double figures in scoring. Madi Mace had 17 points while Gabby Burris chipped in 16 points

For the Bearcats, junior forward Birna Benonysdottir scored a team-best 18 points, going 7-for-14 from the field and draining a pair of three-point field goals. Senior guard Hayley Moore added 15 points, swishing four three pointers in the process.

Junior guard Denai Bowman had nine points to go along with a career-high seven assists and six rebounds while junior forward Clare Traeger finished with six points and a career-best 13 rebounds.

The Bobcats led for most of the game and built their lead to as much as 73-56 with 3:51 left to go in regulation. Mace's jumper gave Ohio its 17-point lead.

From there, however, the Bearcats went on an 11-0 run to pull within 73-67 with 20 seconds left to go. Moore hit a pair of her three-point field goals during that stretch.

Johnson then sealed the game for Ohio, going 3-for-4 from the free throw line during the final seven seconds of regulation.

"I was proud of how we never gave up," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We battled hard against a very good Ohio team today."

Binghamton outshot the Bobcats 41 percent (22-53) to 38 percent (26-68), hit eight of its 19 three-point field goal attempts (42 percent) and was 75 percent from the free throw line (15-20).

It was turnovers, however, that proved decisive. The Bearcats committed 26 turnovers which the Bobcats converted into 27 points.

Freshman guard Camila Kirschenbaum scored a career-high seven points while junior forward Jalyn Van Dyke finished with six points and a career-best nine rebounds.

Binghamton opens America East play next Thursday (Dec. 30) against UMBC at 7 p.m.
