Women’s Basketball Beats Albany 64-52 on Senior Day

Bowman turns in 21-point, 13-rebound performance, Wasco honored in pregame ceremony

VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Denai Bowman scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds, powering Binghamton (5-11, 5-9 AE) to a 64-52 win over Albany (6-8, 5-5 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats gain the split in the weekend series against the Great Danes, having lost 43-38 on Saturday.

Bowman, whose double-double was the first of her career, went 8-for-13 from the field and recorded a game-high four steals. She has now reached the 20-point mark in scoring four times this season.

Before Bowman's impressive performance during the game, the Bearcats honored their lone senior – forward Kaylee Wasco – during a pregame ceremony. With Wasco's family unable to be at the game due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was arranged for her parents to send a video greeting which was played before tip off on the Events Center video board.

Wasco was one of several other Binghamton players who stepped up against Albany. She finished with nine points, four rebounds, two assist and a pair of blocks despite playing only 21 minutes due to foul trouble. Sophomore guard Cassidy Roberts netted a career-best 11 points and dished out five assists, junior guard Hayley Moore scored 10 points and sophomore forward Birna Benonysdottir chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.

Wasco scored all of her points in the opening 14 minutes of the game as the Bearcats raced out to a 30-18 lead with 5:56 left before halftime. From there, Binghamton took a 36-26 lead at the break, which represented their highest-scoring half of the year.

The Great Danes got within seven points twice in the third period but Roberts ended the frame with a coast-to-coast layup, padding the Bearcats' lead to 52-40.

Binghamton took its biggest lead of the day when sophomore forward Clare Traeger grabbed her own rebounds and scored on a layup, stretching the margin to 57-42 with 4:54 left in regulation. The Bearcats then protected their lead by going 6-for-8 from the free throw line during the final 2:01 of the game.

The Bearcats' 64 points represented their third-highest mark of the season, as did their 45.8 field goal percentage (22-of-48). In addition, Binghamton tied a season-high with 14 assists and outrebounded Albany by a 38-29 margin.

"We did a great job today, especially on the defensive end," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We outrebounded them, which was a goal of our going into the day and did not give them a lot of second chances. We knocked down shots and flowed into our offense. It was a great team effort and our players really stepped up for Kaylee Wasco on Senior Day."

Albany had three players reach double figures in scoring, led by Ellen Hahne with 14 points. She was followed by Kayla Cooper with 12 points and Helene Haegerstrand with 11 points.

Wasco, meanwhile, was thankful for the opportunity to have a Senior Day ceremony given the uncertainty of the pandemic but was not too surprised by the video tribute arranged for her parents.

"Everyone kept apologizing that my Senior Day was so different but it was perfect because I got to have one," she said. "My parents don't have to physically be here for me to feel the pride that they have for me. Since our coaching staff is always emphasizing family, I kind of knew they would have something up their sleeves. As much as the staff has gotten to know me these past several years, I have gotten to know them pretty well also."

"I reminded Kaylee before the game that her parents are here with her," Shapiro Ord said. "Kaylee is the most unique individual as far as how she has embraced every opportunity here at Binghamton University. She has been a leader on the court, has already earned two undergraduate degrees and is working on her master's degree. She constantly gets 4.0 GPA each semester, is active in the community and has even been a part of the glee club here on campus. I am very grateful that I have had the opportunity to coach her and be part of her growth."

Binghamton heads to NJIT for a weekend conference series next Saturday and Sunday. Game times have yet to be determined. In addition, the America East announced today that the Bearcats will head to Hartford on Feb. 20 for a single conference game.
