Softball Swept at Stony Brook 1-0 and 10-0

Sunday's series finale canceled due to impending weather forecast

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Dawn Bodrug tossed a no hitter and Melissa Rahrich threw a three-hit shutout, leading Stony Brook (13-5, 2-0 AE) to a 1-0, 10-0 sweep over Binghamton (2-2, 0-2 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The games represented the Bearcats' first conference contests since the 2019 season.

Bodrug issued just a pair of walks and allowed three base runners in improving her record to 7-5. It marked the first time the Bearcats have been no hit since Courtney Coppersmith of UMBC threw a perfect game on March 31, 2019.

Junior Morgan Bienkowski pitched impressively despite being tagged with the loss. She went 4.1 innings, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out three batters. It was a home run by Jourdin Hering in the bottom of the third inning, however, that proved to be the difference in the game.

Senior pitcher Chelsea Howard came on in relief and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings.

Bienkowski, who was part of a relay no hitter last Sunday against St. Bonaventure, dropped to 0-1 with the loss. Her ERA for the season, however, is 1.31.

The second game was also shaping up to be a pitcher's dual between Rahrich and senior Rayn Gibson. Through two innings, the game remained scoreless.

In the bottom of the third inning, however, Stony Brook took advantage of a pair of errors to plate three unearned runs.  The Seawolves then blew the game open with seven more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Nicole McCarvill drove in a team-best three runs for the Seawolves in the second game while Riley Craig and Shauna Nuss each pounded out a pair of hits.

As for Rahrich, she got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning and allowed only two more bases runners during the final four innings. Her record is now 5-2 while Gibson drops to 1-1 with the loss.

Binghamton returns home for a four-game series against Albany next weekend. The two teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
