Bearcats and Seawolves square off at 1 p.m. in big early-season matchup of unbeaten rivals

VESTAL, N.Y. - Riding high after a season-opening 2-1 win at Albany, Binghamton women's soccer (1-0, 1-0 America East) plays its home opener Sunday when BU hosts defending conference champion Stony Brook (1-2, 1-0 AE) at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

In the shortened, six-game season, BU earned a crucial three points with Sunday's dramatic win over an Albany team that had won three of the last five conference titles and was picked three spots ahead of the Bearcats this spring.

Junior forward Stefania Piantadosi provided the riveting finish in the closing seconds, taking a long feed from sophomore midfielder Maya Anand and burying the chance with just 12 seconds left in regulation. Earlier in the game, senior back Erin Theiller scored on a set piece from freshman midfielder Victoria McKnight to give BU a first-half lead.

Stony Brook arrives in Vestal having defeated UMBC 3-1 in its conference opener last Sunday. The Seawolves, winners of two of the last three America East crowns, boast a potent attack that has produced six goals in three games. The team's losses were to No. 23 Hofstra (4-3) and UMass (2-0). The preseason favorite, Stony Brook returns four all-conference players from a 14-6-1 team that scored 36 goals, went 6-1-1 in conference play and led No. 4 Penn State at the half before falling in the NCAA first round.

Since both programs elevated to Division I in 2002, the Seawolves lead the head-to-head series 12-3-3 and have won three of the last four matchups. Last season, Stony Brook posted a 2-0 win in Vestal and in 2018, the host Seawovles won 4-0 on Long Island. Binghamton is 3-4-2 at home in the series, and earned a 1-0 win back in 2017, when BU captured a share of the regular season title.

Binghamton, Stony Brook and Albany head the group of teams in the America East "Division B" and only the top two will advance to the postseason, making each matchup of premium importance.

NOTE
The game will mark the first time Binghamton plays at home in 501 days (16 months), dating back to the soaked Halloween match against UMBC on Oct. 31, 2019. Torrential rains wreaked havoc on the game, which BU won 2-0 in a shortened 85 minutes on the saturated turf. The win clinched a playoff spot for the '19 squad.
