BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Ivana Pjetri and
Stefania Piantadosi scored 36 seconds part midway through the first half to propel visiting Binghamton women's soccer (3-1, 2-1 America East) to a 2-0 win over Vermont (1-3, 1-2 AE) Thursday afternoon at blustery Virtue Field.
The Bearcats held an 11-4 cushion in shots and recorded the team's second straight shutout. The offensive flurry set a school record for fastest two goals, eclipsing the old mark of 43 seconds set in a win over Iona in 2017.Â
"Today our players put in a complete and solid 90-minute performance," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We had to deal with some weather conditions, which as been a familiar theme this spring. But we played through that and built a two-goal lead before halftime. This season we have expected different players in numerous occasions to step up and contribute and we saw that again today with a complete team performance. This was a strong result and we can enjoy this for a moment and then rest up for a quick turnaround with another tough conference matchup coming up with NJIT."
Binghamton had a strong wind at its back for the first half and Pjetri got things started in the 27th minute. After some nice footwork, senior midfielder
Sarah Dibble sent a ball to the feet of
Olivia McKnight just outside the box. With her back to the goal, McKnight fed the ball through her legs to a rushing Pjetri, who shook off a defender and touched the ball into the lower left corner for her first goal of the season.Â
After the UVM kickoff, BU quickly gained possession after wing back
Nicole Scudero won a ball inside midfield and sent it toward the right side of the box. Piantadosi received it some 20 yards away from goal, spun and struck the bouncing ball on a high arcing shot that carried over the Catamount keeper into the top netting. It was Piantadosi's third goal in four games this season. She leads the entire America East in goals per game (0.75). Â
Haylee Poltorak and
Mackenzie Hanna shared the shutout with each playing a half. Poltorak made three saves and Hanna made one.Â
Binghamton returns home to face NJIT in the team's Senior Day game at 1 p.m. on Sunday. After the non-conference designation for today's added game, BU has two conference games remaining in the regular season and the team will resume its push for a top-two division finish and accompanying postseason berth. Â
