BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior pitcher
Rayn Gibson fired a complete-game victory and senior third baseman
Hannah Lyons clubbed a home run, highlighting Binghamton's split against UMBC in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at The Diamond. The Bearcats (5-5, 2-5 AE) won the opener 2-1 but the Retrievers (12-6, 1-1 AE) got even with a 3-0 decision in the second game.
Gibson, who graduated from nearby Bel Air (Md.) high school in 2016, made a successful return to her home state. She tied a career-high by going the full 8.0 innings in the first game against UMBC. In the process, Gibson scattered one run on four hits, struck out five batters and issued only one walk.
Lyons meanwhile, broke a 1-1 tie with a leadoff home run in the top of the eighth inning, giving the Bearcats the lead for good. She then sealed the victory in the bottom of the same inning with an unassisted double play.
Earlier in the game, Jill Fittry gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when she scored on a throwing error. The Retrievers leveled the score at 1-1 when they scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Gibson is now 3-2 this season, having won her past two decisions.
Courtney Coppersmith, the 2019 America East Pitcher of the Year, held the Bearcats to one run on four hits in the opener. With the loss, however, her record fell to 7-2.
In the nightcap, it was Maddie Leach and Coppersmith that combined to pitch a five-hit shutout. Leach survived a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third inning and turned the game over to Coppersmith following a scoreless fourth inning.
Senior pitcher
Chelsea Howard pitched effectively for the Bearcats, allowing just one unearned run on five hits over 3.1 innings of work. Still, it was a pair of unearned runs that gave UMBC a 3-0 lead through four innings.
Freshman
Hannah Mearns pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Leach is now 3-1 this year while Howard falls to 1-1. Coppersmith recorded her first save of the season.
Junior second baseman
Marissa Braito hit a team-best .600 during the doubleheader (3-for-5) while senior shortstop
Makayla Alvarez went 2-for-5 (.400).
Binghamton and UMBC are scheduled to conclude their weekend series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
