ORONO, Maine – Binghamton baseball (3-5, 3-5 America East) split a doubleheader at Maine (8-5, 3-2 AE) Friday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond, losing the opener 2-0 before taking the nightcap 8-3.
In Game 2, BU snapped a 3-3 tie with five deciding runs over the final two innings. In the eighth, BU used a leadoff hit batter, sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and two walks to score the go-ahead run. Senior catcher
TJ Wegmann worked an 0-2 count into a bases-loaded RBI walk to give the Bearcats a 4-3 lead. Senior right fielder
Daniel Franchi followed with a two-out, two-run single off an 0-2 pitch to extend the cushion to 6-3.
In the ninth, BU sent eight batters to the plate and added two more runs on two hits and three walks. Maine pitchers issued eight walks in the game. Wegmann added an RBI single and went 2-for-2 with three walks and three RBI.
Freshman
Justin Rosner (W, 2-0) earned the win with three shutout innings of 1-hit relief. Senior
Jake Miller struck out three in the ninth to wrap it up.
Freshman left fielder
Tommy Reifler went 3-for-4 with an RBI and senior 3B
Justin Drpich added two doubles and two runs. Reifler raised his team-high batting average to .500 and his on-base percentage to .609, also tops on the team.
Binghamton led 3-0 before Maine tied it in the middle innings.
The opener was a pitcher's duel with the two starters combining to strike out 25 hitters in the seven-game contest. Maine did all the game's scoring in the first inning with two runs on two singles, a walk and an error.
Sophomore starter
Thomas Babalis struck out a career-high 10 and limited the Black Bears to three hits (two that left infield) and one earned run. At one point he struck out five straight and despite absorbing the tough loss, Babalis cut his season ERA nearly in half.
Unfortunately, BU's offense couldn't break through against America East strikeouts leader Nicholas Sinacola, who fanned 15 Bearcats. Binghamton put runners on base in five of the seven innings but managed just three hits – one each from Franchi, Reifler (double) and second baseman
Cavan Tully. The Bearcats stranded six for the game.
The teams finish out the four-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday. Sophomore
Jack Collins (1-0. 0.90 ERA) and junior
Josh Kopcza (0-1, 1.80 ERA) are slated to start. Â
