Women's soccer defeats UMBC in OT, 1-0

Dibble scores dramatic game-winner to clinch playoff spot for Bearcats (5-1)

BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior midfielder Sarah Dibble scored 3:40 into the first overtime to lift Binghamton women's soccer (5-1, 4-1 America East) to a dramatic playoff-clinching 1-0 win over host UMBC (1-4-1, 1-4 AE) in the regular season finale for both teams Friday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park.

Dibble's goal clinched a share of the America East divisional crown for the Bearcats, who will now carry the No. 2 seed into the tournament semifinals next Thursday.

"We are very excited to be heading back to the postseason," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We get to enjoy this moment, enjoy knowing we finally have our full roster back and then prep for what will be a tough matchup at UMass Lowell next week."

Locked in a physical battle that featured 20 combined shots and 28 fouls, BU was less than 17 minutes away from a draw that likely would've kept it out of the four-team postseason. But on the pivotal play, midfielder Ivana Pjetri intercepted a clear attempt on the left side and sent a long left-footed ball through the box. Midfielder Victoria McKnight tracked it down on the right side and fed junior back Nicole Scudero, who took her mark to the endline before sending a low cross into the six. Dibble finished her run and redirected it into the far corner for her first goal of the season.

"For Sarah to score the game-winner is so fitting for this whole senior class," Bhattacharjee said. "Today wasn't our prettiest game of soccer and UMBC was very effective in what they did. But it's still an encouraging sign when you don't have your best play and can still find a way to win. It's also terrific to get another shutout."

The Bearcats had two great chances in the game's first four minutes but consecutive close-range shots from senior Dora Hayes and McKnight were both saved. Binghamton held a 7-4 shots advantage in the first half before UMBC evened it at 10-10 through regulation.

Junior keeper Haylee Poltorak made five saves for her second solo shutout in five games. Poltorak made several diving stops to keep the Retrievers off the board.
