Baseball splits doubleheader with Stony Brook

Drpich hits walk-off RBI double to win Game 1; Bearcats season comes to a close

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (16-20, 16-20 America East) split a doubleheader with Stony Brook (29-17, 25-10 AE) in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon from Rumbletown Stadium. The Bearcats won the opener 5-4 on a walkoff before the Seawolves took Game 2, 6-3.

In Game 1, BU trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh before rallying for two runs in their final at-bat. Senior catcher TJ Wegmann led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore left fielder Tommy Reifler. Senior right fielder Daniel Franchi followed with an RBI double to right center, scoring Wegmann with the tying run. Two hitters later, senior third baseman Justin Drpich ripped a two-out, ground rule double to the warning track in left field to score Franchi with the game-winning run.

The comeback made a winner out of sophomore Tanner Beang (W, 4-0), who pitched the final two innings in relief of sophomore Ryan Bryggman, who struck out five in his 5.0 innings.

The teams traded single runs throughout the contest with BU scoring in the first, second and fourth innings and Stony Brook countering with runs in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh. The Bearcats totalled 10 hits - seven by seniors after the group was honored pregame.

Drpich went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Franchi went 3-for-4 with an RBI and freshman DH Eric Madenberg went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Wegmann also delivered an RBI.

In Game 2, the Seawolves erased a 1-0 BU lead with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Stony Brook then added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

The Bearcats struck first on a Drpich RBI single in the bottom of the third. Freshman left fielder Christian Perez led off with a double to left field - his first collegiate hit. Perez went to third on a flyout and scored on Drpich's third RBI of the day.

Down 6-1, BU got two runs back in the sixth - one on the first collegiate hit and RBI for freshman shortstop Isaiah Corry. Senior center fielder Shane Marshall led off with a walk and went to second on a single by DH Cavan Tully. Corry then sent a chopper on the right side that reached the outfield and scored Marshall. Tully then came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.

Both sides would not tally a run over the final three innings of play, as the final score concluded at 6-3 despite Binghamton out-hitting Stony Brook nine to seven.

Senior starter Jake Miller struck out seven in his final collegiate outing, which went 4.2 innings. Drpich had two hits and an RBI to pace the offense.

Before the game, BU honored its six seniors: Miller, Wegmann, Drpich, Franchi and Marshall.
