WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Freshman pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux won her second straight decision while freshman outfielder
Shelby Carvalho and senior third baseman
Hannah Lyons hit back-to-back home runs, highlighting Binghamton's split against Hartford in an America East softball doulbleheader on Friday afternoon at the Hartford Softball Field. After dropping the opener 4-3, the Bearcats (10-14, 5-11 AE) bounced back to take a 4-1 decision against the Hawks (6-12, 4-12 AE) in the second game.
L'Amoreaux tossed five shutout innings in the nightcap to record her second straight decision. In the process, the current America East Rookie of the Week lowered her ERA to a team-best 1.31 for the season. In her past three games (all starts), L'Amoreaux has allowed just three runs over 18 innings of work and has struck out 15 batters. Her record is now 2-1 this season.Â
Carvalho and Lyons, meanwhile, hit their consecutive home runs in the top of the fourth inning of second game, giving L'Amoreaux a 2-0 lead to work with. One inning later, L'Amoreuax helped her own cause with a RBI double, padding the Bearcat lead to 3-0.
Sophomore pitcher
Sophia Pappas tossed the final two innings to nail down her first save of the season. She got around a solo home run by Danielle Rocheleau in the bottom of the sixth inning (which cut the lead to 3-1) and held the Hawks hitless over the final 1.2 innings.
Senior shortstop
Makayla Alvarez put the Bearcats up 4-1 with a RBI double in the top of the seventh inning. She finished the day 2-for-5 (.400) during the two games and is now hitting .357 for the season.
Caylee English took the loss in the first game, dropping her record to 2-6.
In the opener, the Bearcats grabbed a 3-0 lead by just the middle of the second inning. Junior second baseman
Marissa Braito keyed a two-run top of the first inning with triple and a run scored. One inning later, senior outfielder
Lauren Martinez led off with a double and scored two batters later on a RBI groundout by senior outfielder
Rayn Gibson.
Things fell apart defensively for Binghamton, however, over the next two innings. Rocheleau trimmed the deficit to 3-1 with RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. Chandler Mitchell then tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run double and later scored on a throwing error.
The Bearcats left the tying runner on third base when the game ended three innings later.
Julianna Consenski went the distance in the first game, improving her record to 3-5. The loss was tagged to freshman pitcher
Hannah Mearns, who is now 2-4.
Braito finished the day 2-for-4 (.500).
The two teams conclude their weekend series with a noon game on Saturday.
