VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior forward
Ethan Homler and redshirt sophomore midfielder
Anthony Lazaridis each scored within a six-minute stretch in the first half, powering Binghamton (2-0-0) to a 2-1 win over St. Bonaventure (0-1-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Monday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats are off to their first 2-0-0 start since 2017.
In addition to the win, the Bearcats welcomed back their fans for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The announced attendance on Monday was 1,006.
Homler's goal, which came in the 27th minute, was his first of the season and the fourth of his career. It was assisted by junior midfielder
Sean Molloy.
Lazaridis, meanwhile, netted his first career goal in the 33rd minute, padding the Bearcat lead to 2-0. It was unassisted.
St. Bonaventure, however, trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the 60th minute on a goal by Matthew Wrobel. It was assisted by Francesco Caorsi.
On defense, junior goalkeeper
Mats Roorda made six saves to record his second victory of the season.
"I thought we had a fantastic start and had a really good first half," head coach
Paul Marco said. "The liveliness and enthusiasm that we had seen all week showed up again in the game. I thought at halftime they made some adjustments that gave us some problems. Overall, I am delighted that we got another win. But we need a complete performance and I think we only got about a half today."
St. Bonaventure held a 13-12 edge in total shots. The shots on goal were even at seven each.
Binghamton heads to Niagara on Friday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
NOTE: The Bearcats' record in home openers since they moved into the Bearcats Sports Complex in 2007 is now 10-3-1.
