VESTAL, N.Y. - Coming off a shutout win on Sunday, Binghamton women's soccer looks to continue that momentum when the Bearcats (3-4-1) make the short drive up to Ithaca to face Cornell (1-3-2) Wednesday night. The teams will battle at natural grass Berman Field beginning at 7 p.m. The game, BU's final non-conference matchup, will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
Binghamton snapped a four-game winless stretch with a 2-0 victory over visiting St. Francis on Sunday. After celebrating their five seniors beforehand, the Bearcats quickly got down to business, netting their first goal just 7:47 into the game. Binghamton added a second goal in the 21st minute and held 60% possession throughout to make the margin stick.Â
Junior forward
Maya Anand had a foot in both goals, assisting on the first before notching her team-best fourth goal of the season. Freshman forward
Peyton Gilmore was the recipient of a doorstep tap-in and produced her first collegiate goal in the eighth minute.
In back, senior keeper
Haylee Poltorak made five saves and her back line added two key blocked shots to record their third shutout of the season.
In this week's America East statistics, Poltorak ranks first in the conference and 16th in the country in total saves (44). She also is second in both save percentage (.846) and saves per game (5.5) and ranks third in goals against average (0.97). Anand is tied for first and 33rd in the country in game-winning goals (2) and ranks third in the AE goals (4) and fifth in points (9). Senior forward
Stefania Piantadosi is tied for first with three assists. Sophomore midfielder
Victoria McKnight is tied for third with two assists and twin sister
Olivia McKnight is tied for seventh with two goals.Â
Cornell is coming off a 1-0 loss at Iona on Sunday. That defeat extended the Big Red's winless streak to five after the team opened up with a 2-0 win over Canisius. Along the way are two notable results - a 2-2 tie against America East power Albany and a scoreless draw at BIG EAST member Syracuse. Cornell was returning to action after missing the entire 2020-21 year after the Ivy League ruled against sports during COVID. So the program hadn't competed in nearly two years (657 days) before August. The team went 4-10-1 in Fall 2019. It will be coaching reunion on the sidelines as former Bearcat assistant Jackie Firenze is now on Cornell's staff. Firenze was an assistant under BU head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee for four seasons (2016-19). Â
The Big Red lead the all-time series 6-4-3 though the Bearcats are unbeaten over the last three meetings (2-0-1). In the last encounter in 2019, the teams played to a 1-1 tie in Ithaca. Binghamton won the previous two games in 2017 and 2018, both by identical 2-0 scores. The teams, separated by just 36 miles, have played each other 11 straight non-COVID years. Eight of the 13 games have been decided by one or fewer goals.  Â
