VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (6-5-1, 2-1 America East) scored a season-high four goals, including three in the second half, to roll past visiting UMBC (4-4-2, 1-2 AE) 4-1 Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win was BU's fourth in its last five games.Â
Sophomore midfielder
Victoria McKnight snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 66th minute and classmate
Lexi Vegoda added a penalty kick goal less than four minutes later to give the Bearcats a cushion. Senior defender
Nicole Scudero capped the scoring with her first career goal in the 87th minute.Â
The Bearcats held a commanding 18-4 shots advantage but early in the second half, found themselves in a 1-1 deadlock after the Retrievers scored the equalizer just six minutes into the period. But BU turned up the offense and won for the 15th time in 19 all-time meetings with UMBC.
"It was a game of waves and I thought in the first half we had a lot of possession but didn't have a lot of dangerous attacking opportunities," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "It was good for Stef (Piantadosi) to get us that goal and go into half with the lead. And then UMBC had the first 10-12 minutes of the second half and put us under. But once we gave up the goal, we played with more spirit and fire. I'm pleased about getting four goals and the three-goal advantage. This was a hard tactical game for us and we are very pleased to get the result."Â
Senior forward
Stefania Piantadosi opened the scoring in the 35th minute, taking a perfect ball from junior
Maya Anand and finishing her 1-on-1 chance with a rip to the near post. It was her first goal of the season to accompany her three assists.Â
UMBC tied it after a strong individual play down the left side, but BU quickly turned the tide with three goals in the game's final 25 minutes.Â
Anand notched her second assist of the night with the dish to McKnight in the 65th minute. After some nice dribbling into the middle of the field, Anand slotted a ball to McKnight, who made a touch into the box before sending a 14-yard shot into the top right corner. Then just 3:40 later, junior back
Grace Vittoria was tackled in the box, warranting a penalty kick. Vegoda confidently tucked a left-footed kick into the corner for a 3-1 cushion. Scudero finished the scoring with a great solo effort. She stepped up to intercept an outlet throw from the UMBC keeper 40 yards away, dribbled down the left, cut into the middle and struck a 20-yard shot to the lower right corner.Â
Binghamton remains home to welcome Hartford at noon on Sunday.Â
