Women’s Basketball Wins 67-44 at UMBC

Benonysdottir scores 20 points, Bowman adds 17 points

BALTIMORE, MD. – Junior forward Birna Benonysdottir scored a game-high 20 points and junior guard Denai Bowman added 17 points, powering Binghamton (5-10, 1-4 AE) to a 67-44 victory over UMBC (1-14, 0-5 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday evening at the Retriever Athletic Center. The win snapped the Bearcats' six-game losing skid and was their first road win of the year.

Benonysdottir shot 9-for-16 from the field and sank a pair of three-point field goals. It marked the third time in her career that she has reached the 20-point mark in scoring. Benonysdottir entered the game ranked second in the conference in scoring (16.5 ppg.).

Bowman, meanwhile, was 8-for-10 from the field, which included baskets at the end of the second and third periods. She also added six assists and four steals. Bowman was ranked third in the America East in scoring entering the game (13.6 ppg.).

Also reaching double figures in scoring against UMBC was senior guard Hayley Moore, who finished with 13 points. She went 5-for-10 from the field and canned three of her six three-point attempts. Moore also finished with three assists.

It was a dominant third period that proved decisive for the Bearcats. With the game deadlocked at 29-29 at the half, Binghamton outscored UMBC 20-5 over the ensuing 10 minutes of play to go up 49-34. Benonysdottir had nine points and Moore drained a pair of three pointers during that stretch.

In the fourth period, the Bearcats put the game out of reach with a 14-2 run to go up 65-40 with 3:28 left in regulation. Bowman had five points and Benonysdottir added four points during that span.

Binghamton shot 49 percent for the game (28-57), including 6-of-14 from three point range (42 percent). In addition, the Bearcats took care of the basketball, finishing with 18 assists as opposed to 15 turnovers. Binghamton also held a commanding 25-6 lead in points off of turnovers.

"We did a good job tonight with our pressure defense and converting turnovers into points," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We shot well and we took care of the basketball."

Keelah Dixon led UMBC with 17 points.

Junior guard Cassidy Roberts dished out six assists for the second game in a row. Junior forward Jalyn Van Dyke had six rebounds and a game-high two blocks.

Binghamton returns home to face Albany on Monday at 6 p.m.
