Men's Soccer Loses 3-1 at No. 21 Cornell

Big Red nets all its goals in the final 34 minutes

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Host Cornell (10-3-0), which is ranked No. 21 in the nation, scored three times in the final 34 minutes of the match to rally for 3-1 victory over Binghamton (3-7-4) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday night at Berman Field. The loss ended the Bearcats' five-game unbeaten streak.

Through nearly 60 minutes, the Bearcats were up 1-0, having taken the lead on graduate student forward Ethan Homler's second goal in as many matches. His shot in the 41st minute from outside the box found the upper-right corner of the net. The assists were credited to junior midfielder Shawn Coles and senior back William Noecker.

In the 56th minute, however, the Big Red deadlocked the match at 1-1 on a goal by Noel Ortega. They then took the lead at 2-1 in the 67th minute on Connor Drought's third goal of the season.

With Binghamton pressing for the equalizer, Cornell iced the match with 38 seconds left on a goal by Henry Hilbert.

The Bearcats had a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal through the first half. In the second half, however, Cornell out shot the Bearcats 13-5 to finish the match with a 17-11 cushion. Shot on goal were 9-2 Cornell.

Senior goalkeeper Mats Roorda finished with six saves.

"I thought we played really well in the first half and we got a great goal from Ethan," head coach Paul Marco said. "We were on top of the match but in the second half, some of our individual guys let up in key moments and Cornell is a good team that will make you pay for your mistakes."

Binghamton has now faced a pair of nationally-ranked teams so far this season. Back on Sept. 24, it squared off against then No. 22 Vermont.

Cornell entered the match ranked No. 21 in the United Soccer Coaches' Top 25 poll as well as No. 26 in the College Soccer News Top 30 Poll.

Binghamton resumes America East play on Saturday with a 7 p.m. match at New Hampshire.
