Men’s Soccer Beats UMBC 3-2 in AE Quarterfinals

Bearcats advance to semifinals at UNH on Thursday

BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior midfielder Markos Touroukis scored with one minute left in the first overtime period, leading fifth-seeded Binghamton (6-8-4) to a 3-2 victory over fourth-seeded UMBC (10-6-2) in an America East quarterfinal game on Saturday night at the Retriever Soccer Field. With the victory, the Bearcats advance to the conference semifinals for the first time since 2015 and will head to top-seeded New Hampshire for a 6 p.m. match on Thursday.

The Bearcats continue to turn their season around following an 0-6-2 start. They are now 6-2-2 in their last 10 matches, have won three straight contests and have scored 10 goals in those last three victories.

Touroukis, who has now scored in two straight matches, fired his winning shot from just outside the box. He recovered a loose ball and fired it into the lower-right corner of the net.

The Bearcats still had to get through a second 10-minute overtime period but held the Retrievers to just one shot during that span to finish off the match.

"Our guys were outstanding today," head coach Paul Marco said. "We showed a lot of grit and fight at the end of the match. This team has come so far in the last two months and I couldn't be prouder of them."

As was the case on Tuesday night, when the Bearcats won 4-2 at home, UMBC scored first. Ismailcan Usta finished off a corner kick in the 13th minute to put the Retrievers up 1-0.

Binghamton tied the match in the 36th minute when it finished off a corner kick of its own. Senior back Will Noecker scored from close range with the assists going to graduate student forward Ethan Homler and senior midfielder Parker McKnight.

The Bearcats then took the lead in the 67th minute on a blast by redshirt junior midfielder Anthony Lazaridis in the 67th minute. McKnight was credited with his second assist of the night.

Binghamton's lead, however, was short lived. UMBC capitalized on another corner kick, with Lasse Kelp getting the goal in the 69th minute.

On the defensive side of the field, senior goalkeeper Mats Roorda made six saves in the victory. He offset UMBC's 15-7 lead in total shots and 8-4 lead in shots on goal.

New Hampshire defeated the Bearcats 1-0 back on Oct. 22 at home. It remains the last time the Bearcats have lost a match.

The Bearcats and Wildcats meet in the America East Tournament for the first time since 2010. The postseason series is tied at 1-1-1. The Bearcats won the decisive penalty kick shoot in a 2004 scoreless quarterfinal tie. This marks the first time the two teams will meet in a playoff game at New Hampshire.
