Women’s Basketball Holds Off Fairfield 77-72

Wanzer nets career-high 20 points, Coleman adds 19 points

VESTAL, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman Ella Wanzer poured in a career-high 20 points and sophomore forward Genevieve Coleman added 19 points, powering Binghamton (5-4) to a 77-72 win over Fairfield on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The Bearcats' victory came against a Stag team that won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Wanzer went 7-of-13 from the field as well as 6-for-9 from three-point range. The six three-point field goals represent the highest total reached by a Binghamton player so far this season. Wanzer also dished out three assists against the Stags.

Coleman was 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. In her last two games, she has averaged 16.5 points per game.

Senior guard Denai Bowman, meanwhile, finished with 17 points, going 6-for-11 from the field and sinking five free throws. She also added four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.

For her career, Bowman now has 947 points. She is seven points away from tying Alicia Koppenhoefer (1994-98) for 20th place all-time in program history with 947 points.

The 77 points scored by Binghamton against Fairfield marks its the highest total so far this season. The Bearcats' 56.9 field goal percentage (29-51) also marks their best performance. Furthermore, Binghamton's 61.5 three-point field goal percentage (8-13) is its second-best effort of the year.

Binghamton blew the game open with a 16-0 run to go up 32-16 with 5:43 left in the second period. The Bearcats then cruised to a 39-25 halftime advantage. Coleman had 11 points at the break and Wanzer had 10 points.

Coleman gave the Bearcats their biggest lead of the game at the 7:26 mark of the third period. Her jumper gave Binghamton a 50-28 cushion.

The Stags, however, wouldn't go quietly, finishing the third period on a 12-2 run to trim the deficit to 58-47. Janelle Brown had six points and Izabela Nicoletti-Leite had five points during that stretch.

Binghamton had a 74-63 lead with 2:45 left in regulation. That was enough to offset three Fairfield three-point field goals during the remainder of the game.

"Fairfield is a really good team and they don't give up," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord. "We had some players that stepped big time today. We shared the basketball very well and played as a unit."

The Bearcat win overshadowed a game-high 25-point performance by Callie Cavanaugh. She came into the game having scored 30 points twice so far this season.

Nicoletti-Leite, meanwhile, finished with 24 points. In the process, she matched Wanzer with six three-point field goals.

Redshirt freshman guard Jadyn Weltz finished with nine points and tied a career high with six assists. Senior forward Clare Traeger pulled down a team-best six rebounds.

Binghamton heads to Siena on Monday for a 7 p.m. game.

NOTES: Binghamton is now 4-0 at home for the first time since the 2019-20 season ... Bowman is averaging a team-best 12.3 points so far this season followed by Wanzer, with 10.8 points per contest.
