Softball Gains Split in Day Two at Charleston

Bearcats edged 5-3 by Lipscomb, rally for 1-0 win over host Cougars

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore pitcher Allison L'Amoreaux fired a three-hit shutout, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the second day of the College of Charleston Invitational on Saturday at the COC Softball Stadium. The Bearcats (5-4) dropped a 5-3, nine-inning decision to Lipscomb (3-4) in the first game but bounced back to take a 1-0 win over College of Charleston (2-6) in the nightcap.

L'Amoureaux, who started both games and threw 12.0 innings during the day, held the Cougars to three hits in recording her first career solo shutout. She is now 4-1 this season with a 2.20 ERA.

Offensively, senior third baseman Alli Richmond continued her torrid start to the season, going 4-for-8 (.500) on the day with an RBI and three doubles. Her two doubles against College of Charleston set her career high. For the season, Richmond leads the Bearcats with five doubles and a career-best .423 batting average.

Senior outfielder Chloe Morgan went 3-for-7 (.429) over the two games while senior shortstop Makayla Alvarez and sophomore second baseman Gabby Guerrero each finished 2-for-6 (.333).

Against Lipscomb in the opener, senior designated player Sophia Pappas doubled home freshman outfielder Alayna Harbaugh in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Bearcats a quick 1-0 lead. It was her team-best third-RBI during the weekend.

From there, the Bison scored three unanswered runs but the Bearcats rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Guerrero scored the first run on a throwing error and Richmond tied the game on a sacrifice fly.

For the second time this weekend, Binghamton played in a game that went into extra innings. The Bearcats, however, left the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Bison scored the two go-ahead runs in the top of the ninth inning.

The Bearcats left the tying run at the plate when the game ended.

Emily Yakubowski evened her record at 1-1 with the victory while graduate student pitcher Chelsea Howard took the loss, dropping her record to 1-2.

The nine-inning game is the longest the Bearcats have played in since going 10 innings in an 8-7 loss to Albany on May 2, 2019.

In addition to throwing a shutout against the College of Charleston in the second game, L'Amoreaux scored the game winning run. That took place on an RBI single by Guerrero in the top of the second inning.

Defensively, L'Amoreaux and the Bearcats were able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth inning. From there, she allowed just a pair of base runners the rest of the game.

"Our pitchers and defense did a great job getting us out of some tough jams and giving us a chance to win both games," head coach Jess Bump said. "I've continued to be impressed with their presence and composure on the mound.  We will be looking to keep making adjustments offensively heading into tomorrow."

The Bearcats close their weekend at the College of Charleston Invitational with a 10 a.m. game on Sunday against Valparaiso.

NOTES: L'Amoreaux is the first Binghamton pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout since Rayn Gibson beat Stony Brook 1-0 on April 7, 2019. She struck out 10 batters in that game.
