Baseball breaks out offense, topples Lamar 9-5

Evans, Gsell, Di Vietro drive in two runs apiece as Bearcats notch first win of spring

BEAUMONT, Texas - Binghamton baseball (1-2) jumped ahead 7-0 after three innings and grabbed the series finale with a 9-5 win over host Lamar (2-1) Sunday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Senior shortstop Jake Evans and junior first baseman Kevin Gsell collected two hits and two RBI apiece to pace BU's 11-hit attack. Junior right fielder Nick Di Vietro added two RBIs as all nine BU starters contributed at least one hit or run scored in the victory.

Junior starter Ryan Bryggman earned the win with 5.0 strong innings. Bryggman scattered four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. Sophomore reliever Kyle Eskildsen gave up just one hit in 2.0 innings and junior closer Jack Collins retired the last four Cardinal hitters to wrap up the win.

Binghamton put its first four hitters on to start the game and plated five runs in the first inning. After back-to-back walks to graduate center fielder Garrett Matheny and junior second baseman Cavan Tully and a single by junior catcher Connor Aoki, Gsell delivered a two-run double to make it 2-0. Freshman DH Evin Sullivan and Di Vietro each brought home a run with a sacrifice fly and Evans finished out the uprising with an RBI single.

In the second inning, sophomore left fielder Tommy Reifler led off with a single and scored on a Matheny RBI double to make it 6-0. In the third, BU added another run when Sullivan led off with a single, Di Vietro moved him along with a 1-out single and Evans followed with an RBI single.

The Bearcats tacked on two runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Aoki led off with a single, Gsell doubled and with one out, freshman third baseman Devan Bade hit an RBI single. Di Vietro added his second sacrifice fly of the day to make it 9-2.

Lamar scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to finish the scoring.
