Baseball loses to No. 23 Old Dominion 5-2

Bearcats outhit ranked hosts for second straight game; Roselli leads 10-hit attack with three hits

Norfolk, VA. – No. 23 Old Dominion (4-1) built a 3-0 lead and held off visiting Binghamton baseball (2-3) 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Bud Metheny Stadium. The Bearcats outhit their hosts 10-6 but left 13 runners stranded and struck out 17 times.

The Monarchs scored a run in the first and two in the fourth to build an early lead.

In the first, ODU plated an unearned run on a bunt single, two infield errors and sacrifice fly. In the fourth, the Monarchs added a pair of runs on three hits, including a two-out triple and run-scoring double.

Binghamton put runners on base in eight of nine innings, adding five walks to its double-digit hit total.

Down 3-0 in the sixth, BU loaded the bases with one out and plated two runs on bases-loaded walks. The Bearcats drew three bases on balls in the frame and used singles by sophomore first baseman Andrew Tan and freshman right fielder Logan Haskell to set the table. Senior shortstop Jake Evans and graduate center fielder Garrett Matheny coaxed back-to-back walks to score runs and bring BU to within a run, 3-2, before BU left the bases loaded.

But ODU got both runs back in the bottom of the frame on just one hit (two walks and HBP).

Freshman second baseman Nick Roselli went 3-for-4 and sophomore third baseman Isaiah Corry added two hits.

Sophomore starting pitcher John Lumpinski allowed two earned runs in five innings. Lumpinski scattered five hits and struck out six without issuing a walk.

The teams play the rubber game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
