Women’s Basketball Loses 47-34 to Vermont

Benonysdottir scores 15 points, Traeger pulls down 17 rebounds

VESTAL, N.Y. --- Anna Olson finished with a game-high 19 points, powering Vermont (14-9, 8-4 AE) to a 47-34 win over Binghamton (5-15, 1-9 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The contest marked the fifth and final consecutive home game for the Bearcats.

Olson – the 2021 America East Rookie of the Year – went 9-for-16 from the field and made her only free throw attempt. She also added a team-best seven rebounds. Teammate Delaney Richason, meanwhile, turned in a 10-point, six-rebound, one-assist, one-block, four-steal performance.

For the Bearcats, junior forward Birna Benonysdottir netted a team-best 15 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists, one block and a pair of steals. She shot 5-for-10 from the field and swished four of her five free throw attempts. Benonysdottir came into the contest ranked third in the America East with 14.4 points per game.

Fellow junior forward Clare Traeger grabbed a game-high and career-best 17 rebounds. It marked the most rebounds by a Binghamton player since Olivia Ramil had 20 rebounds against UMass Lowell on Jan. 11, 2020. Traeger came into the night ranked second in the conference with 8.1 rebounds per game.

The Bearcats scored the first nine points of the game in the opening 2:59 of play. The Catamounts, however, bounced back to take a 21-19 lead on a three-point field goal by Richason with 1:46 left in the first half.

In the second half, Vermont went on a 9-3 run in a span of 4:54 to go up 33-26 with 4:22 left in the third period. Olson had six of her points during that stretch.

Traeger pulled the Bearcats to within 36-31 on a layup with 9:13 left in regulation. Vermont responded, however, with nine straight points to go up 45-31 with 3:58 remaining. Richason had four points and Olson had three points during that span.

"We came out and hit our shots in the first few minutes of the game but then when our shots weren't going in, that affected us," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We need to focus more on playing in the moment and doing what is right there in front of us but that's a good Vermont team and after the first quarter, they did a good job of crashing the boards and getting the rebounds."

The Catamounts held Binghamton to just 19 percent shooting (5-of-27) over the final two periods of play. They also had an 18-5 advantage in points off of turnovers and a 28-20 edge in points in the paint for the game.

Junior guards Denai Bowman and Cassidy Roberts each dished out a team-best three assists.

Binghamton travels to New Hampshire on Saturday for a noon game.
