Softball Rallies for 4-3 win over Army

L’Amoreaux drives in winning run in eighth inning

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore first baseman Allison L'Amoreaux singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting Binghamton (11-10) to a 4-3 win over Army (7-18) in its final game at the Maryland Tournament on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Bearcats end the three-day event with a 3-2 record and have now won four of their past six games.

The Bearcats were down to their last out, trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior outfielder Chloe Morgan, however, tied the game on a fielding error by the Black Knights. One batter later, L'Amoreaux delivered her game-winning hit into left field and freshman outfielder Sarah Rende scored on the play.

Earlier in the game, Binghamton fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning but junior catcher Quinn DeCicco deadlocked the game in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI single. For DeCicco, it was her ninth RBI in her last five games and extended her hitting streak to a career-high seven games.

One inning later, Morgan put the Bearcats up 2-1 when she scored on a RBI groundout by Sophia Pappas. For Pappas, it was her 10th RBI of the year, which ties senior infielder Alli Richmond for the team lead.

Army came back to tie the game at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly by Liela Hurst. It was the second of two runs she drove for the game.

From there, the Black Knights took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning on a RBI single by Ellie Caldwell. That set the stage for Binghamton's rally in the bottom half of the inning.

Pappas moved to the pitcher's mound for the last 4.1 innings of the game and won her first decision of the season. The loss was tagged to Parker Liantero, who is now 1-1.

"It's always good to head home with a win," head coach Jessica Bump said. "Offensively, we had our little lulls and need to cut our strikeouts down but all of our hitters are making individual adjustments and getting more confident. Our pitchers continue to fight through some tough situations, and our pitch by committee mentality will continue to help us as the season goes on. We are all really excited to head back home to Binghamton and play in front of our fans next weekend."

Richmond finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. She ended the Maryland Tournament with a team-best .500 batting averaged (8-for-16) and extended her hitting streak to a career-high six games. For the season, Richmond leads the Bearcats with a .368 batting average and her 10 doubles rank first in the America East Conference.

Freshman outfielder Alayna Harbaugh also went 2-for-4 on Sunday against Army. She is now batting .364 so far this season.

Senior outfielder Makayla Alvarez, who scored the Bearcats' first run of the game, finished the weekend 6-for-13 (.461). She has now hit safely in her last eight games.

Rende, meanwhile, went 4-for-13 (.307) during the tournament.

Binghamton opens up its home schedule with a three-game series against Iona next weekend. The two teams will play at noon doubleheader on Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.
