VESTAL, N.Y. – Visiting Cornell (5-11) plated five runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Binghamton (12-12) 11-8 in a non-conference softball game on Wednesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The second game between the two teams was called due to darkness with Cornell leading 11-10 after three innings and will not count as an official game.
The official game featured a combined total of 23 hits in addition to the 19 runs. There were also two ties and four lead changes.
Cornell was led by three-hit performances from Emily McKinney, Hanna Crist and Olivia Roney. McKinney also led the Big Red with three RBI while Crist and Roney each drove in a pair of runs.
Binghamton got two hits apiece from junior catcher
Quinn DeCicco -who now has a 10-game hitting streak - junior infielder
Alex Musial, senior outfielder
Chloe Morgan and senior infielder Makayla Avalrez.
DeCicco's 10-game hitting streak is the longest by a Binghamton player since Jessica Rutherford reeled off an 11-game streak during the 2018 season. She has homered twice and driven in 11 runs during that stretch and is now batting .400 for the season.
The Bearcats appeared in command of the game as they took an 8-6 lead into the top of the seventh inning. From there, however, the Big Red pounded out six hits – three of which went for extra bases – to go up 11-8. Emma Antich tripled home a run and Roney belted an RBI double but the big blow was a two-run home run by Emily Muniz.
Binghamton then went down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Earlier in the game, the Bearcats scored four times in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. Musial had an RBI single and scored one batter later on a three-run home run by sophomore infielder
Shelby Carvalho.
Morgan tripled to lead off the bottom of the third inning. She then scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly by senior infielder
Alli Richmond to put the Bearcats ahead 5-1. Richmond now has a team-best 13 RBI so far this year.
One inning later, Alvarez scored on a double steal, padding the lead to 6-1.
The Big Red pulled to within 6-5 with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. The key hit was a three-run home run by McKinney.
After Cornell tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning, the Bearcats retook the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the same inning. Musial had her second RBI single of the game and later scored on a single by freshman outfielder
Alayna Harbaugh.
That set the stage, however, for Cornell's game-changing five-run seventh inning.
Mia Burd improved to 3-4 with the victory while the loss was tagged to senior pitcher
Sophia Pappas, whose record dropped to 1-1.
Binghamton returns to action at Colgate next Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
