PHOENIX, Ariz. – Binghamton (6-6) began its weekend at the Grand Canyon Softball Tournament with a pair of setbacks on Friday. The Bearcats were defeated 7-2 by San Jose State (10-5) in the opener and were edged 6-4 by the host Lopes (13-3) in the nightcap.
Senior third baseman
Alli Richmond went 3-for-7 at the plate during the two games (.429) and drove in a pair of runs. She entered the day tied for No. 19 in the nation with 0.50 doubles per game and kept up that pace with a double against Grand Canyon. For the season, Richmond is batting a team-best .389 and is tied for the team lead with seven RBI.
Freshman outfielder
Alayna Harbaugh was 1-for-3 (.333), drew a pair of walks and scored twice. She reached base five times during the day and is now batting .371 for the season. In addition, her on-base percentage is now a team-best .452.
Senior designated player
Sophia Pappas finished the day 3-for-6 with an RBI double. Freshman outfielder
Sarah Rende homered and drove in a pair of runs. Rende is now batting .333 for the season while Pappas has six RBI.
Against San Jose State, Pappas gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with her RBI double. The Spartans, however, blew the game open with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Joclyn Vidal provided the big blow with a three-run home run.
San Jose State plated single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, padding its lead to 7-1. Rende then completed the scoring with her solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was the first home run of her college career.
Caroline Bowman improved to 1-2 with the victory while graduate student pitcher
Chelsea Howard fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Richmond opened the scoring against the Lopes with an RBI groundout in the top of the first inning. Scoring on the play was Harbaugh.
From there, Grand Canyon plated three runs in both the bottom of the first and fifth innings to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Denae Chatman drilled a three-run home run in the first inning and hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
The Bearcats rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Richmond, Rende and sophomore pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux each came through with RBI singles during that frame. L'Amoreaux is tied with Richmond for the team lead with seven RBI.
Binghamton, however, left the tying run at the plate one inning later.
Jacie Hambrick raised her record to 6-1 with the win while L'Amoreaux was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 4-2.
Grand Canyon came into the game ranked No. 10 in the nation with a .348 batting average. L'Amoreaux, however, held the Lopes to a .261 batting average over six innings. She struck out five batters in the process.
Binghamton faces San Jose State and Grand Canyon again on Saturday. The rematch against the Spartans is slated for 2 p.m. EST followed by the game against the Lopes at 7:30 p.m. EST.Â
