VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's lacrosse dominated its matchup with Marist from the start, using a 6-0 first quarter to grab a 15-6 win over the Red Foxes Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats improved to 3-3 on the season, and have won the first two home games of its three-game home stretch.
"This was a special win for us today," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "We have struggled against Marist in the past and I believe this is a good gauge of how we are growing as a unit."
BU was led by two freshmen in Abigail Carroll and Olivia Muscolino, as they each scored four goals. They both have 12 goals on the season. Madison Murphy added a hat trick and Kenna Newman had a goal and four assists. Defensively, Kelly Quinn had two caused turnovers and Emily Manning made 11 saves.
The Bearcats scored four times in the opening ten minutes, as Murphy scored twice and Newman and Carroll got on the scoresheet. The final three minutes saw two BU goals (Carroll and Muscolino), making it 6-0.
Marist (1-3) responded with a finish to start the second before Binghamton put the pedal down, scoring three straight. Weltner scored one of her two goals at the 10:48 mark. Delaney Hayes of Marist scored to close the half, but the Bearcats carried a 9-2 lead into the break.
Another string of three straight goals to start the third quarter effectively put the game out of reach, as Weltner, Murphy and Muscolino added to their offensive totals. The Red Foxes rallied for three straight goals of their own, but Binghamton righted the ship with a goal by Emily Masera to close the quarter.
Muscolino and Carroll closed out the scoring in the fourth, and Marist added one more goal in the closing seconds to wrap it up. The Bearcats now have a +29 goal differential in their three wins.
BU will finish out its three-game home stretch Wednesday against Canisius at 4 p.m for Staff Appreciation Night.
