Softball Gains Split at UMass Lowell

Bearcats blanked 5-0 in first game, win nightcap 2-1 in 10 innings

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior pitcher Sophia Pappas pitched 7.1 scoreless innings and had a game-winning RBI, highlighting Binghamton's split against UMass Lowell in an America East softball series, which concluded on Sunday afternoon at River View Field. After dropping the first game 5-0, the Bearcats won the finale 2-1 in 10 innings.

The first game was halted on Saturday in the bottom of the fifth inning due to the weather and was finished on Sunday. The second game, meanwhile, marked Binghamton's longest game since May 2, 2018, when it was beaten 8-7 by Albany – also in 10 innings.

Pappas, who came on in relief in both games, did not allow a hit in either outing, struck out eight batters and issued just one walk. She was the winning pitcher in the second game and is now 2-1 with a team-best 2.85 ERA.

At the plate, meanwhile, Pappas delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th inning, giving the Bearcats a 2-1 lead. She then set down the River Hawks in the bottom of the same inning to lock up the win.

"This was a huge win for us today," head coach Jess Bump said. "Getting splits in conference play is very important and those are the games that make the difference when you get to the end of the season."

Freshman outfielder Alayna Harbaugh, who scored on Pappas' hit, finished the series against UMass Lowell 2-for-5 with a pair of walks and was hit by a pitch. Her on-base percentage for the series was .625 and her batting average for the season is now a team-best .372.

Senior infielder Alli Richmond, who doubled home Harbaugh in the top of the first inning, went 2-for-5 in the second game. She now has a team-best 12 doubles and 15 RBI so far this season.

Richmond's RBI double was the only run of the nightcap until the bottom of the fifth inning. That's when Emily Tow scored on a wild pitch to deadlock the game at 1-1.

Sophomore pitcher Allison L'Amoreaux pitched effectively in the second game against Lowell. She scattered one run on four hits through 5.0 innings and struck out five batters before handing the ball to Pappas.

"All weekend, we struggled a bit offensively but we didn't carry that over to pitching," Bump said. "Allison and Sophia combined to pitch a great game and Sophia's composure and confidence in tough situations was fun to watch."

The loss in the second game was tagged to Ryley White, who is now 13-3.

Tow and White, however, were the heroes of the first game. Tow broke open a scoreless tie with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning. One batter later, Olivia Labbe made it 5-0 with a solo home run. White, meanwhile, tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out 16 batters.

Graduate pitcher Chelsea Howard matched White frame for frame in the opener until the River Hawks' decisive bottom of the fourth inning. Her record is now 6-6.

Binghamton travels to Albany on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. America East doubleheader.

NOTES: The victory for the Bearcats in the second game was their first triumph at UMass Lowell since 2016 … Pappas was the lone Binghamton player to record a hit in both games against the River Hawks … with a stolen base in the second game, Harbaugh now has a conference-best 14 steals this season.
