VESTAL, N.Y. – Dawn Bodrug struck out 16 batters in the opener and Corinne Badger smacked a two-run home run in the second game, lifting Stony Brook (22-12, 3-3 AE) to an 8-1, 4-2 sweep over Binghamton (14-18, 1-5 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The first game carried over from Saturday, when it was suspended after two innings.
Bodrug, who entered the weekend ranked seventh in the nation with 11.7 strikeouts per game, held the Bearcats to just one hit and raised her record to 13-6. Badger, meanwhile, now has a conference-best 14 home runs and finished the doubleheader with three RBI.
The Bearcats were held to just six hits over the two games. Senior infielder
Makayla Alvarez, however, finished the weekend 2-for-4 with a double and a triple as well as a pair of RBI.
Stony Brook jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the first game. Alvarez then pulled the Bearcats to within 3-1 in the bottom of that same inning with her run-scoring triple. Play was then halted due to rain after the Seawolves got out of that frame.
In the top of the seventh inning, Stony Brook blew the game open with five runs on five RBI singles. Badger drove in the first run and scored the second run two batters later.
Sophomore
Allison L'Amoreaux fell to 7-8 with the loss.
In the second game, the Seawolves were up 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. An infield single by freshman outfielder
Sarah Rende, however, scored fellow freshman outfielder
Alayna Harbaugh to deadlock the game.
Stony Brook, however, responded with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to go up 4-1. Badger delivered the big blow with her two-run home run.
The Bearcats got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning when Alvarez doubled home Rende.
From there, Bodrug – who came on in relief for the final two innings – retired the final four Binghamton batters.
Bodrug nailed down her first save of the season while Shelbi Denman improved to 7-6. The loss was tagged to graduate student pitcher
Chelsea Howard, whose record is now 5-8.
Binghamton heads to Maine next weekend for a three-game conference series.
