Women’s lacrosse falls to No. 5 Stony Brook

Newman, Weltner, Conover all score for BU in 18-3 defeat

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's lacrosse fell to No. 5 Stony Brook 18-3 Tuesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. An 8-0 run to kick off the game helped carry the visitors to the win, despite two goals for Binghamton in the second quarter.

Freshman Abigail Carroll and sophomore Hayley Weltner put together strong efforts for BU. Carroll had an assist, four draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Weltner had seven draw controls and a goal. Defensively, junior goalie Emily Manning held her ground against a steady Stony Brook attack, making 13 saves.

The SeaWolves (11-2 overall, 4-0 AE) outscored BU (6-7, 1-3) 6-0 in the first quarter, as Kyla Zapolski and Ellie Masera combined for four of the six finishes.

Binghamton rebounded with two goals in the second quarter. Kenna Newman weaved through the defense on the right side and scored at the 6:41 mark before Weltner added a goal off a feed from Carroll with less than a minute remaining in the half.

Stony Brook kept Binghamton off the board in the third quarter, but Annabelle Conover scored her first career goal in the closing seconds to round out BU's scorers. The sophomore scooped up a loose ball and found her way to the front of the goal to score.

Freshman Olivia Muscolino added an assist for Binghamton. The Bearcats were even with the SeaWolves in draw controls, as each side recorded 12.

Binghamton will remain at home Saturday against New Hampshire. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
