Baseball completes sweep of NJIT 3-1

Bade drives in a pair; Collins earns second save of weekend with 3K in final 1.2 innings

UNION, N.J. - For the second straight day, Binghamton baseball compacted all its scoring in one inning and the Bearcats (13-21, 9-9 America East) completed a series sweep of host NJIT (16-18, 10-8 AE) with a 3-1 win Sunday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium. The win was BU's eighth in the last 10 conference games.

Down 1-0 after three, BU scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning before the teams played a scoreless final five frames.

In the fourth, junior first baseman Connor Aoki led off with a home run over the right field wall - his team-high eighth of the season. Freshman DH Evin Sullivan then drew a walk, classmate Nick Roselli singled and sophomore catcher Kevin Reilly walked to load the bases. Freshman third baseman Devan Bade then came through with a two-run single up the middle to make it 3-1.

Junior starter Ryan Bryggman (W, 4-3) pitched six innings and contained NJIT on four hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Kyle Eskildsen worked 1.1 innings to bridge the gap to junior closer Jack Collins, who notched his sixth save with 1.2 hitless innings. Collins struck out three and collected his second save of the weekend, having also wrapped up Friday's opening win.

The Highlanders were limited to seven hits but threatened in several innings and wound up with 11 men stranded for the game. NJIT loaded the bases with one out in the seventh and sent a ball to center field that was caught by freshman Logan Haskell. The Highlanders runner tagged and scored on the play but on BU appeal, was ruled to have left early. One inning later, Collins entered with two runners on but struck out back-to-back hitters to snuff out the threat.

Bade had two RBI and Aoki went 2-for-4 with his home run. Roselli and seniors Colin Mason and Jake Evans had two hits apiece.

The Bearcats next play a non-conference game Tuesday at Siena.
