VESTAL, N.Y. - Freshman second baseman
Nick Roselli delivered a 10th inning, walk-off RBI single to score pinch runner
Christian Perez from second and give Binghamton baseball (6-18, 3-7 America East) a 9-8 win over visiting Hartford in the opening game of a three-game set Friday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Stadium. The win raised BU's all-time home record against Hartford to 30-2. Â
In the see-saw game that featured four lead changes, BU delivered the last blow. Freshman DH
Evin Sullivan led off the inning with a sharp infield single up the middle and took second as the attempted putout throw went astray at first. With speedy pinch runner Perez inserted at second, Roselli slashed a 2-2 pitch into the left field corner to easily score Perez and set off a team celebration between first and second.Â
The Bearcats built a 6-2 lead before the Hawks struck for five runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-6 lead. Binghamton reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh but Hartford countered with a run in the eighth to knot it at 8-8. Earlier, BU shook off a 1-0 Hartford lead with two runs in the first and one in the second. The Bearcats then added two in the fifth to jump ahead 5-1.Â
Junior closer
Jack Collins (W, 1-2) worked 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out three. Several hours earlier, junior starter
Thomas Babalis struck out seven in 6.0 innings and limited Hartford to two runs before departing with a four-run lead.Â
Binghamton collected 15 hits, including a season-high eight doubles. Roselli went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Junior left fielder
Cavan Tully reached base five times with two doubles and three walks. Freshman center fielder
Logan Haskell had two hits and two RBI. Sophomore catcher
Kevin Reilly drove in two runs.Â
After the Hawks' five-run outburst in the top of the seventh, BU trailed 7-6 but Tully and Haskell produced clutch two-out hits. Freshman third baseman
Devan Bade led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore shortstop
Isaiah Corry. Tully then ripped a ball to the wall in right center to score Bade and tie the game at 7-7. Haskell followed with a RBI single to right center to put BU ahead 8-7. Hartford forced extra innings with an RBI bunt single in the eighth.Â
The teams continue the weekend series with a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.Â
