Softball beats Hartford 10-2 to sweep series

Richmond homers twice, Rende drives in four runs

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior infielder Alli Richmond belted a pair of home runs and freshman outfielder Sarah Rende finished with four RBI, powering Binghamton (19-19, 6-6 AE) to a 10-2, six-inning win over Hartford (13-30, 2-13 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats complete the three-game sweep over the Hawks - having won 10-3 and 1-0 on Saturday – and have now won five of their last six games.

The 10 runs represents the third time in its last four games that Binghamton has reached double figures in scoring. In addition, the 13 hits on Sunday is the Bearcats' season-high.

Richmond's two home runs, which were both solo shots, is her career high. She finished the three-game series against the Hawks 5-for-8 (.625) with three home runs and six RBI. In the process, Richmond extended her hitting streak to a career-high seven games. For the season, she is now tied for the team lead with six home runs and has a team-best 23 RBI.

Rende, meanwhile, set her career high with four RBI. Her three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Bearcats the eight-run margin they needed to end the game.

Senior pitcher/designated player Sophia Pappas, meanwhile, came through both on the mound and at the plate. She had a career-high four hits – going 4-for-4 in the process – and pitched the final four innings to nail down her fourth save of the season.

Pappas and Rende staked the Bearcats to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Pappas smacked an RBI double and Rende followed with a sacrifice fly.

Hartford broke the shutout in the top of the third inning on a RBI double by Jordan Nastos. Richmond, however, answered in the bottom of the same inning with a leadoff home run, padding the lead to 3-1.

Nastos doubled home another run in the top of the fifth inning, trimming the deficit to 3-2. Once again, however, Richmond led off that same inning with a home run. Later during the same frame, junior first baseman Alex Musial doubled home a pair of runs and junior pinch hitting Quinn DeCicco singled in another run, extended the Binghamton lead to 7-2.

Richmond and Pappas reached base to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, setting the stage for Rende's game-ending home run over the left-field fence.

Graduate student pitcher Chelsea Howard, who started the game for the Bearcats, improved to 8-8. Taking the loss was Julianna Kocenski, whose record dropped to 7-14.

Musial finished the game 2-for-2.

Binghamton finished the weekend series against Hartford with a .368 batting average and posted a 1.80 ERA.

Pappas, Rende and Musial all finished the weekend with a .500 batting average. Rende homered twice during the weekend and matched Richmond for the team high with six RBI. In addition, Rende tied Richmond for the team lead with six home runs.

Pappas pitched seven innings and posted a 1.29 ERA.

Binghamton hosts Albany on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a single conference game.
