VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Stony Brook (25-23, 19-7 America East) hit a tiebreaking two-run home run in the ninth inning to rally past Binghamton baseball (16-27, 12-14 AE) 7-5 Saturday afternoon from Bearcats Baseball Stadium.Â
Binghamton, which outhit Stony Brook 14-9, led 5-3 after seven innings before the Seawolves countered. Down 7-5 after the home run in the top of the frame, BU put the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth after singles from senior shortstop
Jake Evans (3 hits, 2 runs) and junior left fielder
Cavan Tully (2 hits, RBI). But BU hit into its fourth double play of the game to end it.Â
Down 1-0 early, BU took the lead with three runs in the third inning. Evans led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by senior right fielder
Colin Mason. Tully followed with an RBI double to right center for a 2-1 lead. Three batters later, freshman DH
Evin Sullivan hit an RBI double that bounced over the wall, scoring one but negating a sure BU fourth run in the process.Â
Stony Brook countered with two runs in the fourth to tie it at 3-3 before BU took the lead again with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Evans drilled a one-out triple to the wall in center field and Mason scored him with a sacrifice fly and a 4-3 lead. In the fifth, freshman center fielder
Logan Haskell drew a leadoff walk and junior first baseman
Connor Aoki followed with a single that was misplayed by the Seawolves' outfielder, allowing Haskell to come all the way around for a 5-3 lead.
But Stony Brook scored one in the sixth and one in the eighth to tie the score and then used a one-out single and home run for the winning margin in the ninth.Â
Evans raised his team-high batting average to .349 with a three-hit day. Mason, Aoki, Tully and Sullivan all had two hits.Â
Sophomore reliever
John Lumpinski worked 3.0 innings and allowed just one hit and one run, bridging from starter
Gabe Driscoll (4.0 IP) to closer
Jack Collins (L).Â
The teams will try to complete the weekend series at 1 p.m. on Sunday, though the weather forecast of rain and thunderstorms might say otherwise.Â
