BALTIMORE, MD. - Binghamton baseball capped off the regular season with a dominant 12-3 victory over UMBC Saturday afternoon to win the weekend series. The Bearcats (19-28, 15-15 AE) will be the No. 2 seed at America East Championships, after UMass Lowell and NJIT lost moments after BU won. All three sides finished 15-15 in the conference, but BU owns the tiebreaker between the three competitors.
Five players registered multi-hit games, and Jake Evans led the way with four hits on the day, extending his hitting streak to 20 games. Evin Sullivan, Nick Roselli and Zachary Taylor had home runs and Cavan Tully had two doubles and three RBI. Five pitchers combined to give up three runs on just three hits.
Following a scoreless first inning, Binghamton plated four runs in the top of the second to open the scoring. Roselli hit a home run to center field to make it 1-0 and Tully and Logan Haskell provided two key two-out hits to score three more runs.
Sullivan hit BU's second home run of the day in the third, but UMBC responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Bryggman stranded a runner at third base to limit the damage.
The Bearcats got one of those runs back in the fourth on another RBI double by Tully to make it 6-2 before the Retrievers scratched across another run in the fifth.
Binghamton's bullpen shut the door on UMBC over the final four innings. Dom Dirado, Troy Butler, Kyle Eskildsen and Alex Henderson combined to give up just one hit. The offense tacked on six runs over the final three innings, scoring once in the seventh and eighth and plating four runs in the ninth.
Devin Bade and Sullivan had RBI singles before a Taylor home run, Nick Di Vietro two-run single and Eric Madenberg RBI single wrapped up the scoresheet.
Binghamton will wait and see who it faces Thursday in the America East playoffs. No. 3 seeded NJIT, No. 4 UMass Lowell, No. 5 UMBC and No. 6 Hartford comprise the field competing Wednesday. Maine is the top overall seed and will host the tournament.
