VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton pitchers struck out 17 hitters but visiting Cornell (10-23) scored seven runs in the final three innings to rally past the Bearcats (15-23) 10-8 Tuesday night at Bearcats Baseball Stadium. It was the third meeting between the two teams this spring and Cornell won the rubber game despite BU coming within one strikeout of the school record, set last month.
On the strength of four first-inning runs, BU jumped into the driver's seat early and led 7-3 after six innings. But Cornell struck for four runs in the seventh to tie the game and plated three more runs in the eighth. Binghamton countered with a run in the eighth and then had the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth before a strikeout left two stranded and ended the game.
The teams combined to use 16 pitchers and collected 21 hits in the three-hour game.
Freshman DH
Evin Sullivan went 3-or-5 with two doubles and an RBI and junior left fielder
Cavan Tully went 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBI. Sophomore first baseman
Andrew Tan delivered a two-run home run to highlight the four-run first. It was Tan's third long ball of the season.
The Bearcats rolled out six pitchers for the scripted mid-week assignment and each had two or more strikeouts. Freshman starter
Caden Rothbaum fanned four in his 2.2 innings of work. Junior
Tanner Sinicki struck out three and didn't allow a hit in his 1.1 innings. Freshman
Troy Butler struck out a pair in 2.0 hitless innings and junior closer
Jack Collins (2.05 ERA) kept sharp by striking out the side in the ninth.
In the first inning, freshman center fielder
Logan Haskell drove in the first run with an RBI single, scoring Tully, who had led off with a walk. Two batters later, Sullivan ripped the first of his two identical doubles inside the third base bag, scoring Haskell. Two batters later with two out, Tan crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field bullpen for a 4-0 cushion.
Cornell chipped away with single runs in the second and third innings before BU countered with one in the fourth on two walks, a steal and wild pitch. Cornell tightened it again with a run in the sixth before BU made it 7-3 with a pair in the bottom of the inning - courtesy of Tully, who sent a two-run double down the right field line.
The Big Red then plated four runs on four hits - all with two outs - in the seventh. One inning later, Cornell used a two-run home run and four hits to take the lead for good.
The Bearcats got one back in the eighth on a two-out Tully RBI single up the middle but BU left two stranded. In the ninth, Sullivan and Roselli reached base with one out but a fielder's choice and 3-2 strikeout closed the night.
Binghamton continues its 11-game homestand and returns to conference play with a big weekend series against reigning America East champion NJIT beginning on Friday.
